Haputale

Haputale is a breathtaking mountain town, perched high at 4,695 feet above sea level, offering one of the most scenic viewpoints over the vast Southern plains. The region is renowned for its rich biodiversity, featuring many unique species of flora and fauna, cloud forests, and lush tea plantations that blanket the surrounding hills.

Thanks to its elevation, the climate in Haputale is refreshingly cool, with temperatures typically below 25°C, giving the town a calm, misty charm distinct from the rest of the island. The Uva Basin begins along the Haputale Mountain Ridges, which extend west toward Horton Plains and the sacred peak of Adam’s Peak. This highland escape even gained global recognition when CNN highlighted Haputale as one of Asia’s most overlooked destinations.

Adventure seekers can enjoy hiking and trekking here—an energizing and rewarding experience amid cool mountain air. The town’s must-visit attractions include Lipton’s Seat, the historic Adisham Bungalow, and the iconic Dambatenna Tea Factory—a favorite stop to witness traditional tea production.

Haputale is truly a spectacular place where nature, cool climate, and adventure blend beautifully to create an unforgettable highland journey.

Adam’s Peak (Sri Pada)

Adam’s Peak is set in a stunning region of the Southern hill country, a mountain that has inspired awe and devotion for centuries. Also known as Sri Pada (Sacred Footstep) and Samanala Kanda (Butterfly Mountain), this graceful conical peak rises 2,243 m (7,359 ft) above sea level in the Central Highlands.

For over 1,000 years, the summit has been a spiritual beacon, drawing pilgrims from Sri Pada Pilgrimage Season along scenic forest-lined trails. Today, it remains a bucket-list trek for both locals and global travelers, captivated by its mystery, sacred legacy, and the breathtaking sunrise views waiting at the top.

The mountain stands majestically above surrounding forested hills, with no other peak of similar size nearby, making it one of the most prominent landmarks within the Peak Wilderness Sanctuary. This sanctuary, together with Horton Plains National Park and the Knuckles Mountain Range, was recognized as a World Heritage Site in 2011.

Adam’s Peak is meaningful to many faiths:

  • Buddhists honor it as the home of Buddha’s Footprint,

  • Hindus believe it belongs to Lord Shiva’s Footstep,

  • Christians and Muslims regard it as Adam’s First Step after leaving the Garden of Eden.

Beyond its religious significance, the peak is also famous for the enchanting butterfly migration, celebrated as the Butterfly Gathering, where thousands of butterflies fill the surrounding trails during the climbing season.

The hike consists of about 5,000–6,000 stone steps, winding upward through misty forests.

  • No technical climbing is needed,

  • The ascent typically takes 2–4 hours, depending on the trail and fitness level,

  • And the descent takes around 1–2 hours.

Whether for spirituality, adventure, or nature, Adam’s Peak offers an unforgettable climb filled with beauty, serenity, and wonder in every step.
