Sri Lankan Culture & Values

Sri Lankans embrace a humble, artistic, and heart-centered way of life, expressed beautifully through hospitality that has been admired for centuries. The nation’s culture is a fusion of traditional art, dance, and music, shaped by the influence of Buddhism from the 2nd century B.C. and early tribal civilizations like the Yaksha and Naga, long before 300 B.C. The island also reflects cultural layers introduced through ancient Indian invasions, which contributed to the development of architecture, agriculture, and advanced irrigation systems. Sri Lanka later witnessed the reign of many powerful kings who transformed the nation through remarkable bravery and intelligence. From the early 16th to the mid-20th century, the country experienced Portuguese, Dutch, and British rule, bringing democracy, structured legal systems, modern education, and commercial and agricultural advancements that further enriched its cultural identity. Traditions and customs, preserved for over 2,500 years, remain an essential part of everyday life, interwoven across the four main ethnic groups—Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, and Burghers—and their faiths: Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity. The timeless greeting ‘Ayubowan’—spoken with clasped palms and a gentle head nod—means ‘May you live long’, while Tamils say ‘Vanakkam’, and Muslims warmly greet with ‘Assalamu Alaikum’, reflecting the island’s deeply rooted diversity and unity.
